Discretionary Housing Payments: How much is your Local Authority Spending?

The interactive charts below display the Discretionary Housing Payment returns data for the financial year 2016/17. The raw data released by the Department for Work and Pensions is available here.

Aside from the spread of data outlined below, what will be immediately obvious is that the sizeable variation in the levels of spending has persisted. North Lincolnshire spent just 17.2% of their total allocation (!), with Stratford-upon-Avon spending 188.9%. In total, the underspend returned to the DWP comes to £7,235,868 – money which could otherwise be put to good use helping those affected by a whole range of reforms to housing benefit. The problems with the reliance on these payments have been discussed in more detail elsewhere.
